The Problem
iDry Restorations was contacted by a commercial client — a large retail showroom — experiencing a Category 3 flood event caused by external rainwater inundation, including mud and debris. The Auckland storm had overwhelmed the property's drainage, sending contaminated floodwater throughout the premises.
The flood resulted in extensive damage across the entire property:
- Walls — water saturation and mud contamination across multiple rooms
- Carpeted areas — fully saturated with contaminated water
- Furniture and display items — damaged by floodwater and mud
- Rugs and soft furnishings — waterlogged and contaminated
All affected areas exhibited high moisture readings, indicating that water had penetrated deep into building materials. As a Category 3 flood, the water was classified as grossly contaminated, requiring specialised cleaning, disinfection, and disposal procedures per IICRC/S500 international standards.
The client needed the property restored as quickly as possible to minimise business disruption and revenue loss.
Our Process
Our team deployed a rapid, systematic response over six consecutive days. We arrived on a Sunday morning for the initial urgent assessment and worked continuously until the property was fully restored.
Emergency Response & Initial Extraction
Our team arrived Sunday morning for an urgent assessment. We immediately began extracting excess water using industrial-grade submersible pumps and truck-mounted extractors. All accessible surfaces were cleaned and disinfected with professional antimicrobial treatments. We then installed 45 blowers and 12 dehumidifiers to begin the controlled drying process.
Deep Cleaning & Debris Removal
Monitored drying progress with moisture metre readings. Cleaned remaining mud from all surfaces, removed damaged carpet, disposed of rubbish and unsalvageable furniture. Restored the carpark and driveway areas. Scaled up equipment with an additional 14 blowers and 4 dehumidifiers to accelerate drying in stubborn areas.
Material Removal & Disinfection
Completed thorough cleaning and disinfecting of all remaining surfaces. Removed all damaged materials including saturated carpets and contaminated rugs. Emptied water collection containers from dehumidifiers and continued monitoring moisture levels throughout the property.
Structural Coordination & Expanded Drying
Coordinated with builders who cut into GIB walls and removed damaged wooden flooring to expose hidden moisture pockets. Cleaned and disinfected the exposed floor surfaces. Installed an additional 6 blowers and 3 dehumidifiers targeting the newly exposed areas to ensure thorough drying behind walls and under floors.
Monitoring & Continued Drying
Conducted comprehensive moisture readings across all wooden structures, wall framing, and exposed surfaces. Emptied collection bins and maintained all drying equipment. Readings showed significant progress, with moisture levels trending toward acceptable thresholds across the majority of the property.
Final Assessment & Handover
Performed final moisture assessment with readings confirming the property had reached acceptable drying levels. All drying equipment was removed at the client's request. A comprehensive handover report was delivered documenting the full restoration process, moisture readings, and equipment deployment logs for the client's insurance records.
The Outcome
The Home Ideas Showroom was successfully restored to pre-loss condition within just 6 days of our initial emergency response. The restoration was delivered in full compliance with IICRC/S500 international standards for Category 3 flood events.
